What this result means

Years old: 36.

Age: 36 years, 7 months, 11 days (13,372 days total)

How this is calculated

Age = target date − birth date, broken into years, months, and remaining days

Years: difference in years, adjusted if birth month/day has not yet occurred in the target year
Months: difference in months within the current year (0–11), adjusted for day overflow
Days: difference in day of month, with borrow from previous month if needed
Total days: floor((target date − birth date) / 86,400,000 milliseconds per day)
Days until next birthday: ceil((next birthday date − target date) / 86,400,000 ms)

How to Calculate Age

Age is the length of time a person has existed, typically measured from their birth date to a reference date (usually today).

The three components of age

1. Years — The most common way to express age. This is the number of complete years that have passed since birth. 2. Months — Additional months beyond the complete years. For example, if you were born on January 15, 2000, and today is September 20, 2026, you are 26 years and 8 months old (8 complete months beyond the 26 years). 3. Days — Remaining days after accounting for years and months. This gives you a precise age, down to the day.

Example calculation

Birth date: March 15, 2000 Target date: November 22, 2026

Steps: 1. Calculate years: 2026 − 2000 = 26 years. But have March 15 passed in 2026? Yes, it's November. So you have 26 complete years. 2. Calculate months: November (11) − March (3) = 8 months. 3. Calculate days: 22 − 15 = 7 days. 4. Result: 26 years, 8 months, 7 days old.

Exact age vs. colloquial age

  • Exact age is your precise age down to the day, as calculated above.
  • Colloquial age is how people typically refer to your age in everyday speech. When someone asks "How old are you?", you typically give only the years: "I'm 26."

Why this matters

Precise age is important for: - Legal and administrative purposes (age of majority, retirement age, age-based benefits) - Medical contexts (age-based health thresholds, medication dosing) - Insurance calculations (age affects premiums, eligibility) - School grade placement (cutoff dates for kindergarten entry, for example) - Milestone tracking (knowing your exact age in months for infants and young children)

Age calculations and leap years

Do leap years affect age calculations? Technically, yes, but the effect is negligible.

  • If you were born on February 29 (leap day), you have a "leap day birthday" that only occurs every 4 years.
  • In non-leap years, leap day babies celebrate on February 28 or March 1.
  • For age calculation purposes, most systems treat February 29 as the birthday and count years normally. The calculator will correctly count the years.

Example: - Born: February 29, 2000 - Target date: February 28, 2026 - Age: 25 years, 11 months, 30 days (you haven't yet reached the leap day of 2000 on the 28th). - Target date: March 1, 2026 - Age: 26 years (you passed the anniversary of your birth).

Days until next birthday

The calculator also shows days until your next birthday, which is useful for: - Planning parties — Know how much time you have to organize. - Gift predictions — Count down to your special day. - Age-based eligibility — Some benefits activate on your birthday.

Fun facts about age

  • The oldest verified person ever was Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122 years and 164 days.
  • Your exact age in seconds is roughly: (days lived × 86,400) seconds.
  • The average global life expectancy is around 73 years.
  • Biological age can differ from chronological age depending on health, lifestyle, and genetics.

Assumptions

  • The calculator assumes the Gregorian calendar. Historical dates before the Gregorian calendar's adoption (October 15, 1582, in most Catholic countries) may not be accurate depending on the local calendar in use at that time.
  • If the birth date is after the target date, the calculator returns 0 for all values (no negative ages).
  • Leap years are handled automatically based on the Gregorian calendar rules (every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400).
  • If born on February 29 (leap day), the birthday is treated as occurring on February 29 in leap years and on March 1 or February 28 in non-leap years for day-counting purposes, but years are calculated normally.
  • The calculator uses the civil calendar date, not astronomical or biological markers of aging.
  • Times of day are not considered; only dates matter. A person born on January 1 at 11:59 PM and someone born on January 2 at 12:01 AM are counted as 1 day apart, not nearly simultaneous.
  • The 'target date' defaults to 2026-08-12 if left blank, but a live calculator would use the actual current date.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this calculator show years, months, AND days?

Most people refer to age by years alone ('I'm 25 years old'), but the complete age includes months and days too. For example, someone born on January 1, 2000, is exactly 26 years, 7 months, and 11 days old on August 12, 2026. This breakdown is useful for precise calculations, especially for infants and young children, medical contexts, and legal documents.

What if I leave the 'As of date' field blank?

If you leave the target date blank, the calculator defaults to today's date (2026-08-12 in this example, but it typically uses the actual current date in a live calculator). This gives you your current age. You can also enter a specific past or future date to see what your age was or will be on that date.

How do leap years affect age calculations?

Leap years add an extra day (February 29) every 4 years. If you were born on February 29 (leap day), your birthday technically only occurs every 4 years. Most age calculators and legal systems treat leap day as February 29, and count birthdays on February 28 in non-leap years. The calculator handles this correctly by comparing full dates, so if you were born on Feb 29, 2000, the calculator will correctly identify your age regardless of whether the current year is a leap year.

What is the difference between 'age in years' and 'exact age'?

Your **age in years** is just the number of complete years that have passed (e.g., 'I'm 30 years old'). Your **exact age** includes the years, months, and days, down to the precise day you were born. For example, someone might be 30 years old, but their exact age might be 30 years, 3 months, and 15 days. This calculator provides both.

Can I use this to calculate the age of famous people or historical figures?

Yes. Enter their birth date as your birth date and the reference date as today (or the date they died, if they have passed away). For example, to find Shakespeare's exact age when he died in 1616, enter birth date 1564-04-23 and target date 1616-04-23. The result would be 52 years old. You can calculate ages for any historical person or public figure using publicly available birth and death dates.
