How the break-even calculation works

The math iterates month by month, accumulating each payment (adjusted for COLA if applicable) until the running total crosses the lump sum. Divide those months by 12, add your current age, and you have the break-even age.

Note that this payback break-even is the most intuitive and conservative benchmark. A more aggressive comparison — when cumulative annuity exceeds the lump sum's compounded value (which keeps growing) — would require a far longer horizon and is shown separately in the chart and schedule. The annuity's implicit IRR addresses this from the other direction: at what return rate do the two strategies produce equivalent lifetime value?

If you live past the break-even age, you have recovered the lump sum in cash flow. The longer you live beyond it, the more you benefit from the annuity's guaranteed income stream. If you die before it, the lump sum route would have preserved more wealth for your heirs.

The implicit rate of return

A complementary way to evaluate the annuity is to find its implicit IRR — the annual return the lump sum would have to earn to exactly match total lifetime annuity payments. If you can reliably invest the lump sum and beat that rate, the lump sum is mathematically superior. If you cannot — or are unwilling to take that risk — the annuity wins.
